Chapter 7 - The Secret Interrogation Room

Inside the sterile, windowless interrogation room at the King County Justice Center, Julian Vance sat shackled to the steel table.

His designer suit was gone, replaced by a coarse orange prison jumpsuit. His eyes were bloodshot, surrounded by dark purple hollows of exhaustion and terror.

Prosecutor Karen Miller tossed the L’Enfant Couture modeling contract and the offshore gambling wire logs onto the table directly in front of him.

“You're looking at twenty to twenty-five years in the Washington State Penitentiary, Julian,” Prosecutor Miller stated with chilling neutrality. “Aggravated Child Abuse, Coercion, Commercial Child Exploitation, and Wire Fraud.”

Julian began hyperventilating, tears and snot dripping onto his orange collar.

“It was Mom’s idea!” Julian sobbed, pointing his handcuffed hands toward the two-way mirror. “She found the French agency! She said Elena had the perfect face! She promised me the advance would cover my debts with the Costa Rican syndicate! I didn't want to hurt Elena... Mom said the trash bag was what European models do! I was desperate!”

“You pinned your six-year-old daughter to the floor while your mother struck her with a belt, Julian,” Prosecutor Miller replied, her voice cold as ice. “You told a terrified child that her mother would ruin everything if she spoke the truth.”

“I was trying to protect the family!” Julian wailed, slamming his cuffed hands against the table. “Tell Clara to talk to me! She’s my wife! She won't let me rot in prison! Please, let me call my wife!”

In the observation room behind the one-way glass, I stood beside Uncle Arthur, watching the pathetic spectacle.

I felt no sorrow, no lingering affection, and no regret.

I took off my platinum wedding band, handed it to Uncle Arthur, and said softly, “File the expedited divorce petition and the emergency permanent protective order. I want his name stripped from Elena’s birth certificate.”
