Chapter 5 - The Commercial Contract in the Safe

While Detective Stone dispatched units to the Vance residence, I called my maternal uncle, Arthur Sterling—a retired federal district judge and senior trustee of the Sterling Heritage Fund.
By 10:30 PM, Uncle Arthur had arrived at the precinct with a team of private forensic accountants and a court-certified discovery order.
“Why was Victoria obsessing over Elena’s weight, Clara?” Uncle Arthur asked as we reviewed Julian’s personal financial filings in the conference room. “There is something financial driving this. Victoria never does anything unless there is money attached.”
Within ninety minutes, our forensic team uncovered the hidden paper trail inside Julian’s private cloud storage.
It wasn't a family tradition. It was a massive, predatory commercial syndicate.
Three months earlier, Julian and Victoria had secretly entered into a high-stakes contract with L’Enfant Couture, a luxury European children’s fashion conglomerate based in Paris. Elena had been signed to an exclusive, five-year international modeling and brand ambassador campaign valued at $750,000.
The contract contained an abhorrent, illegal annex clause:
‘Clause 14-B (Aesthetic Maintenance): The talent must maintain precise biometric parameters (Chest: 52cm, Waist: 48cm, Weight not to exceed 19.5 kg). Failure to meet measurements at the January 5th Paris fitting will result in immediate forfeiture of the $250,000 signing advance and mandatory $500,000 breach liquidated damages.’
Uncle Arthur stared at the contract, his face turning an icy shade of white.
“Julian received the $250,000 advance three months ago,” Arthur discovered, pulling the bank ledgers. “He wired $180,000 of it directly to private offshore sports-betting bookmakers in Costa Rica to cover his personal gambling debts.”
My hands shook with pure, unadulterated horror.

Julian hadn't just allowed his mother to torture our child for discipline. He was using our six-year-old daughter as a financial collateral hostage to pay off his illegal gambling debts. If Elena gained weight and failed the Paris fitting, the bookies would come for him.
He had strapped a trash bag to his own daughter’s flesh to save his own skin.
