Chapter 4 - The Forensic Flashlights

At 8:45 PM, the bright examination lights of the Pediatric Trauma Unit at Seattle Children’s Hospital illuminated Elena’s small back.
Dr. Miriam Vance—a senior pediatric forensic specialist with thirty years of child protection experience—gently ran a specialized ultraviolet diagnostic lamp over Elena’s skin. Under the blacklight, the pattern of subcutaneous hemorrhaging glowed with undeniable clarity.
“Three distinct impact strikes across the lumbar region,” Dr. Miriam dictated to her resident. “Contusions measuring approximately 1.5 centimeters in width, consistent with a heavy leather strap or belt buckle. Secondary frictional erythema and chemical heat rash across both axillae and flank regions, consistent with prolonged contact with non-breathable polymer sheeting.”
Elena sat on the examination table clutching her stuffed bear, tears silently tracking down her cheeks.
“Did it hurt, sweetheart?” Dr. Miriam asked gently, resting a warm hand on Elena’s shoulder.
Elena nodded softly. “Grandma told me if I cried loudly, Daddy would lock the bathroom door and leave me in the dark.”
Dr. Miriam’s pen froze. She closed her medical chart, her expression transforming from clinical precision to absolute, steely resolve.
“This is an emergency statutory referral,” Dr. Miriam told me, stepping into the private consultation room. “Under Washington State law, I am executing an immediate hospital-hold order and filing a Level-1 Child Endangerment notification with the King County Sheriff’s Special Assault Unit.”
The door opened, and Detective Marcus Stone stepped into the room. He was a seasoned investigator with a heavy coat and tired, uncompromising eyes.
“Mrs. Vance?” Detective Stone asked.
“Yes, Detective,” I replied, handing him my phone along with the high-resolution photo drive. “Here is the unedited audio recording of Victoria Vance confessing to the assault thirty minutes ago, explicitly stating that my husband Julian assisted in the physical restraint.”
Detective Stone plugged the drive into his mobile forensics terminal.

As Victoria’s arrogant, recorded voice echoed through the hospital office—‘Your daughter needs to learn how to control her body... Julian held her shoulders while I applied the belt!’—the detective’s jaw hardened into iron.
“Stay with your daughter in the secure pediatric ward, Mrs. Vance,” Detective Stone commanded. “We are picking up your husband and his mother before midnight.”
