Chapter 3 - The Father Who Held Her Hands

When I returned to our suburban home at 7:30 PM, Julian’s black Audi was parked in the driveway.
I walked into the kitchen. Julian was standing at the island, pouring himself a tumbler of Scotch, loosening his silk tie. He was thirty-four, an executive logistics consultant with a polished smile that had fooled me for eight years.
“Where were you?” Julian asked, his tone laced with defensive irritation. “Elena said you took photos of her back.”
I set my keys on the counter. “Your mother whipped our six-year-old daughter with a belt because she ate a cookie. And you held her hands down while she did it.”
Julian’s face tightened. He took a long swallow of Scotch, refusing to meet my eyes.
“Mom was just enforcing structure, Clara,” Julian muttered. “You spoil Elena. You let her eat whatever junk she wants. She needs discipline.”
“Structure?” I took a step toward him. “She wrapped her in a commercial trash bag to make her sweat like an MMA fighter cutting weight! What kind of sick, depraved father pins down his own baby girl for that?!”
Julian slammed his glass onto the granite counter, liquor splashing over the edge.
“You don't understand the pressure I’m under!” he roared, his mask of suburban perfection cracking in half. “We have opportunities you couldn't even dream of! Mom is preparing Elena for an elite life!”
“What opportunities require a six-year-old to starve herself, Julian?”
Julian stepped forward, grabbing my upper arm with an iron grip. “Drop this, Clara. I’m warning you. Do not take her to a clinic. Do not speak to your friends. If you call Child Protective Services, you will destroy this entire family!”
I looked down at his hand on my arm, then looked up into the bloodshot eyes of the man I had once loved.
“Let go of me, Julian.”

Something in my tone made him flinch. He released his grip, stepping back with a scowl.
“I am taking Elena to the emergency trauma center right now,” I said, walking toward the hallway. “And when the forensic team is finished documenting her injuries, you will discover that the only thing getting destroyed in this house is you.”
