Chapter 9 - THE SECRET HIDDEN INSIDE THE CELLO

The discovery happened while I was examining the cello.
My mother had taught me to recognize the smallest imperfections in wood.
A seam.
A repaired crack.
A hidden joint.
And there, beneath the lower edge of the instrument, I found a narrow panel that didn't belong.
I opened it carefully.
Inside was a small envelope.
Yellowed with age.
Addressed to me.
EVELYN.
My hands trembled.
I unfolded the letter.
My mother's handwriting filled the page.
My darling girl,
If you're reading this, then someone has finally returned my cello to you.
There are things I never told you about our family.
Your father made agreements I begged him not to make.
I tried to protect you.
But I was afraid.
The documents hidden with this letter may explain why.
Please remember one thing.
You were never a burden.
You were the best thing I ever made.
Love, Mom.
I began crying.
Then I found the documents.
Ownership records.
Financial transfers.
A signed agreement.
May you like
And one name that made my stomach turn.
Petra Whitfield.
