Chapter 7 - THE SISTER WHO WANTED HER HUSBAND

Iris arrived at Castellano Manor two weeks later.

She wore a designer coat.

Expensive perfume.

And the same expression she'd worn when she laughed at me in our father's living room.

Rosa escorted her into the drawing room.

I was sitting beside Adrian.

Iris stopped when she saw us.

Her eyes moved over the furniture.

The chandeliers.

The paintings.

Then Adrian.

She smiled.

“Evelyn.”

I looked at her.

“Iris.”

She stepped closer.

“I wanted to see how you were settling in.”

I didn't believe her.

Adrian remained silent.

Iris sat across from us.

Then said:

“I've been thinking.”

I waited.

“Maybe I judged the situation too quickly.”

My stomach tightened.

She smiled at Adrian.

“Marriage is a serious responsibility.”

Adrian tilted his head.

“Indeed.”

Iris leaned forward.

“And perhaps the wrong daughter was chosen.”

Silence.

I stared at her.

Adrian's expression didn't change.

Then he asked:

“Miss Whitfield, are you suggesting I replace my wife with you?”

Iris laughed nervously.

“I'm only saying—”

“No.”

One word.

Quiet.

Absolute.

Iris froze.

Adrian turned toward me.

“Evelyn is my wife.”

His voice softened.

May you like

“And I have no intention of changing that.”

For the first time in my life, Iris had nothing to say.
