Chapter 4 - THE BILLIONAIRE WHO KNEW HER MOTHER'S NAME

Three nights after our wedding, Adrian invited me into his library.
The room smelled of leather and cedar.
Tall shelves lined the walls.
A fire burned quietly.
He sat in a chair near the window.
“Evelyn.”
I approached.
“Yes?”
“I wanted to tell you something about your mother.”
My heart tightened.
I sat across from him.
Adrian folded his hands.
“Eleanor Whitfield restored a cello for my grandfather.”
I stared.
“When?”
“Twenty years ago.”
He paused.
“She discovered something inside it.”
I frowned.
“What?”
“Documents.”
My stomach tightened.
Adrian continued.
“Records connected to an old shipping company.”
I stared at him.
“What kind of records?”
He hesitated.
“Financial records. Ownership agreements. Things certain people wanted hidden.”
My heart pounded.
“And my mother?”
“She refused to destroy them.”
I swallowed.
“Is that why you wanted to marry into my family?”
Adrian went still.
Then answered:
“No.”
I looked at him.
“Then why?”
May you like
His voice softened.
“Because I made a promise to someone who once saved my life.”
