Chapter 13 - THE TRUTH ABOUT HIS BLINDNESS

Adrian didn't deny it.
We sat in his study after the police left.
His dark glasses rested on the desk.
For the first time, I saw his eyes clearly.
One was clouded.
The other was sharp and gray.
He looked at me.
“I can see shapes.”
I stared.
“Faces?”
“Sometimes.”
“Colors?”
“Some.”
I swallowed.
“How long?”
He hesitated.
“My vision began returning after surgery eighteen months ago.”
I felt my chest tighten.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
He looked down.
“Because the men who attacked me believed I was completely blind.”
I stared.
He continued:
“They underestimated me.”
My eyes filled.
“And you let me believe it too.”
Adrian closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
Silence.
Then he whispered:
“I'm sorry.”
I stood.
“I need time.”
He nodded.
“I understand.”
I walked toward the door.
Then stopped.
“Adrian.”
He looked up.
“Did you marry me because of my mother?”
He hesitated.
Then answered:
“At first, I wanted to fulfill a promise.”
My heart tightened.
He continued:
“But I fell in love with you because of who you are.”
I closed my eyes.
Then left.
