Chapter 14 - THE FAMILY SHE CHOSE

I stayed with Rosa's sister for three weeks.
Adrian didn't pressure me.
He called once.
Left a message.
Then waited.
During that time, the investigation into Petra's financial dealings continued.
My father finally admitted that he'd allowed my mother's property to be misused.
He apologized.
I listened.
But I didn't immediately forgive him.
Some wounds needed more than words.
Adrian sent me the legal documents confirming that the cello, workshop tools, and recovered assets belonged to me.
He also arranged for independent counsel to represent my interests.
No conditions.
No demands.
No expectation that I'd return.
One evening, I called him.
He answered immediately.
“Evelyn?”
I swallowed.
“Do you miss me?”
Silence.
Then:
“Every day.”
My eyes filled.
I whispered:
“I miss you too.”
He exhaled.
I continued:
“But I need a marriage where we tell each other the truth.”
Adrian's voice broke.
“I know.”
I closed my eyes.
“Can we start again?”
For a moment, he couldn't speak.
May you like
Then whispered:
“Yes.”
