Chapter 8 - THE NIGHT THE BLIND MAN SAW TOO MUCH

The first time I suspected Adrian wasn't completely blind happened in the library.
I dropped a small brass key.
It bounced beneath a chair.
Before I could move, Adrian turned his head toward the exact spot.
“Under the left leg,” he said.
I froze.
“What?”
“The key.”
I stared.
“How did you know?”
He smiled faintly.
“I heard it.”
I looked down.
The key was exactly where he'd said.
I told myself it was coincidence.
Then something else happened.
One evening, I entered the dining room wearing a green dress.
Adrian paused.
“You look lovely.”
I laughed.
“You can't see me.”
His expression changed.
Then he said:
“I can hear when you're smiling.”
My heart tightened.
I wanted to believe him.
May you like
But something about the way he'd turned toward me felt different.
As though he had seen more than he was willing to admit.
