Chapter 9 - The Federal Gavel of Justice

Six months later, Courtroom 4B of the United States District Court in Hartford was packed to maximum capacity for the sentencing of Julian Coleman and Dr. Malcolm Reeves.

Sitting in the front row of the gallery were Jacob and Jonah, sitting proudly between Nathan and me. The boys were radiant, healthy, with rosy cheeks, full heads of brown curls, and energetic smiles, dressed in handsome little navy blazers.

Chief Judge Evelyn Sterling looked down from the bench with severe, uncompromising moral authority.

"In the matter of the United States versus Julian Coleman and Malcolm Reeves," Judge Sterling declared, her voice echoing through the stone hall. "The defendants engaged in a calculated, depraved, and monstrous campaign to poison two innocent six-year-old children in their own home for financial gain."

Judge Sterling struck her heavy wooden gavel with a resounding crack.

"Julian Coleman is hereby sentenced to Life Imprisonment without the possibility of parole at ADX Florence Federal Penitentiary."

Julian collapsed onto the defense table, weeping in broken, ragged gasps.

"Malcolm Reeves, for your gross violation of the Hippocratic Oath and felony participation in attempted murder, you are sentenced to forty-five years in federal correctional custody, with permanent revocation of your medical license."

As federal marshals hauled the handcuffed men toward the heavy iron holding cells, Jacob and Jonah hugged my waist tightly, laughing happily.

Justice was absolute, complete, and unshakeable.
