Chapter 3 - The Arrogance of Dr. Reeves

Dr. Malcolm Reeves walked up the grand staircase whistling a classical tune, swinging his bespoke leather medical bag with effortless arrogance.

When he reached the upper landing and saw me standing beside Nathan with the open air vent and the black device resting on a stainless-steel tray, his whistle died abruptly in his throat.

"Nathan?" Dr. Reeves asked, forcing a polite, confused chuckle. "What is this circus? Why is the domestic staff dismantling the HVAC system? Jacob and Jonah need complete quiet for their neurological exams."

Nathan didn't move. He stood in the center of the hallway, hands buried in his slacks, his dark eyes fixed on Reeves with lethal precision.

"Dr. Reeves," I spoke up, stepping forward with the tray. "As the primary attending physician for the past six months, what heavy-metal clearance panels did you run on the twins?"

Reeves scoffed, rolling his eyes with theatrical disdain. "I don't answer to a glorified babysitter! Nathan, this is completely absurd! The boys have a degenerative autoimmune syndrome. I’ve consulted with the top neuromuscular chairs at Harvard!"

"Then you won't mind explaining this device found inside their shared ventilation duct," I said smoothly, pointing to the ultrasonic diffuser.

Reeves’s pupils dilated. A bead of sweat formed on his forehead. "That... that’s an ionized air purifier! I had it installed three months ago to sterilize ambient allergens!"

"An air purifier filled with concentrated Thallium acetate?" I challenged, holding up the cartridge. "An air purifier that diffuses an EPA-banned systemic cellular poison directly into six-year-old lungs while they sleep?"

Reeves took an involuntary step backward toward the stairs. "You're insane! You have no medical credentials! Nathan, she’s fabricating evidence to extort your estate!"

"She has two degrees from Johns Hopkins, Malcolm," Nathan said, stepping forward.

Reeves froze.

"I had her background vetted before she set foot past my gate," Nathan continued, his voice sending a chill down the hallway. "And unlike you, Malcolm... she doesn't have a secret offshore bank account in the Cayman Islands that received $400,000 thirty days after my wife's funeral."

Reeves’s face drained of every drop of color. He dropped his leather bag onto the floor.

Before he could turn and run down the stairs, Marcus and two tactical operators emerged from the shadows, slamming Reeves face-first against the wall and pinning his arms behind his back.

"Search his car, search his clinic, and lock him in the cellar security suite," Nathan commanded. "Now."
