Chapter 9 - The Federal Gavel of Absolute Retribution

Six months later, Courtroom 5A of the United States District Court for the Central District of California was packed to maximum capacity for the sentencing of Victoria Montgomery and Julian Cole.

Sitting in the front row of the gallery was Edward Montgomery, dressed in a sharp, elegant navy suit, holding Julian Hayes’s hand with quiet, sovereign confidence.

Victoria Vance and Julian Cole sat at the defense table in bright orange federal detention jumpsuits, their hands and feet bound in heavy steel transport chains. Victoria’s former Beverly Hills glamour had been completely pulverized by six months in county detention; her hair was unstyled, her face gaunt, hollow, and stripped of all pride.

Chief Judge Eleanor Sterling took the bench with severe, uncompromising moral authority.

“Victoria Vance, Julian Cole,” Judge Sterling declared, her voice echoing through the silent stone chamber like rolling thunder. “You engaged in a calculated, depraved, and monstrous conspiracy of corporate embezzlement, identity theft, and physical and emotional abuse against a defenseless five-year-old child, motivated by shameless greed and complete moral bankruptcy.”

Judge Sterling brought down her heavy wooden gavel with a resounding crack that shook the courtroom.

“Victoria Vance is hereby sentenced to fourteen years at the Federal Correctional Institution, Dublin, without the possibility of early parole.”

Victoria collapsed forward onto the defense table, letting out a broken, hopeless wail as federal marshals secured her transport chains.

“Julian Cole is sentenced to sixteen years at the United States Penitentiary, Lompoc, followed by full mandatory financial restitution of $25 million.”

Judge Sterling struck the gavel a second time.

“The marriage between Edward Montgomery and Victoria Vance is declared permanently dissolved ab initio, with sole, exclusive, unchallengeable legal and physical custody of Lily Montgomery awarded permanently to the father, accompanied by a lifetime protective restraining order.”

As the marshals hauled the two weeping convicts through the heavy iron holding door forever, Edward took a deep, pure breath of absolute peace.

Justice was complete, unshakeable, and eternal.
