Chapter 6 - THE DOCTOR WHO HAD LIED FOR ELEVEN YEARS

Dr. Samuel Whitmore had retired four years earlier.
He lived in a quiet Connecticut town.
Elena reached him through Nathan Cole.
The doctor agreed to speak only after learning that the hospital records had resurfaced.
They met in a small attorney's office.
Whitmore looked older than Elena remembered.
His hands trembled.
“Mrs. Romano.”
Elena stared at him.
“You told me my baby died.”
He lowered his eyes.
“I know.”
“You told me there was nothing anyone could do.”
He swallowed.
“I know.”
Elena leaned forward.
“Why?”
The doctor closed his eyes.
Then whispered:
“Because I was threatened.”
Elena felt cold.
“By whom?”
Whitmore hesitated.
Then answered.
“Aldo Romano.”
Elena stared.
The doctor continued.
“He arranged for the baby to be removed from the hospital.”
“Why?”
Whitmore looked at her.
“Because someone believed your daughter would be safer if Dominic thought she was dead.”
Elena shook her head.
“Safer from whom?”
May you like
The doctor looked away.
And Elena realized the answer might be worse than she'd imagined.
