Chapter 8 - Evelyn’s Perfect Family

Evelyn accepted a plea agreement.
She testified against Julian in exchange for reduced charges.
She admitted arranging the fertility-clinic fraud.
She admitted helping forge the trust amendment.
She admitted knowing Julian planned to frighten Daniel.
But she denied expecting his death.
“I only wanted to protect the family,” she said.
The prosecutor asked:
“Which family member were you protecting when Clara’s embryo was stolen?”
Evelyn had no answer.
“Which family member were you protecting when Daniel was left beside the road?”
Silence.
“Which family member were you protecting when Chloe was deceived about the child she carried?”
Evelyn looked toward Julian.
“My son.”
There it was.
Her definition of family contained one person.
Everyone else existed to support him.
The judge later said love without moral limits becomes permission.
Evelyn had given Julian permission his entire life.
