Chapter 6 - The Child They Called an Heir

Chloe went into labor seven weeks early.

Stress had increased her blood pressure.

The baby was delivered by emergency cesarean section.

He weighed four pounds and required neonatal care.

I arrived at the hospital after Chloe’s attorney called.

Julian was in custody by then.

Evelyn had been released pending trial under strict conditions.

She came anyway.

Hospital security stopped her.

“That is my grandson,” she shouted.

The reproductive-law judge had already issued temporary guardianship orders.

Neither Julian nor Evelyn could enter.

Chloe named the baby Daniel.

Not Julian.

Not an old family name.

Daniel.

When I saw him inside the incubator, my knees nearly failed.

He had my brother’s nose.

My father’s chin.

Tiny hands that opened and closed as though searching for something.

Chloe stood beside me in a wheelchair.

“He is yours,” she whispered.

“He is also connected to you.”

“I carried him, but the rest was built on lies.”

“That does not erase what your body did.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“I don’t want to fight you.”

“I don’t know what I want yet.”

The court ordered a gradual guardianship plan.

Because Chloe had carried and delivered him, her bond mattered.

Because my embryo had been used without consent and I was the genetic mother, my rights mattered.

Daniel’s safety mattered most.

We agreed to a temporary arrangement few people understood.

He would live with me after discharge.

Chloe would have supervised contact and therapy.

No decisions would be made by Julian’s family.

It was not neat.

It was humane.

Hurt people often wanted clean victories.

May you like

Children needed careful ones.
