Chapter 9 - The Truth Inside the Courtroom

The trial lasted eight weeks.
Financial experts showed the stolen funds.
Doctors explained the embryo fraud.
Mark described the crash.
Thomas presented Daniel’s statement.
Chloe testified about the affair, fertility lies, and Julian’s call before Daniel’s death.
I testified last.
Julian’s attorney tried to portray me as a wealthy woman using power to take a child from the woman who carried him.
“I did not choose this arrangement,” I said. “Neither did Chloe.”
“You seek custody.”
“I seek safety.”
“You froze accounts.”
“They contained stolen money.”
“You removed your husband from the house.”
“He broke in with sedatives.”
The attorney changed direction.
“Did you fail to give Julian a child?”
I stared at him.
“No woman fails because pregnancy ends.”
The courtroom became silent.
“And the child Julian tried to use as proof of my failure was created from my embryo.”
The defense never recovered.
Julian was convicted of conspiracy, financial fraud, identity theft, reproductive fraud, attempted kidnapping, unlawful restraint, obstruction, insurance fraud, and homicide-related charges connected to Daniel’s death.
He received forty-six years.
Evelyn received twelve under her plea agreement.
The clinic director received a substantial sentence and lost her medical license.
Mark received a reduced sentence for cooperation but remained imprisoned.
Chloe pleaded guilty to financial conspiracy and false statements. Because she cooperated and had not known about the embryo theft or crash plan, she received probation, restitution, and mandatory counseling.
At sentencing, Julian looked at me.
“You took everything.”
“No,” I said.

“You spent years taking. The court finally stopped you.”
