Chapter 7 - THE SECRET HER FATHER BURIED

The attackers escaped before security could identify them.
But they left something behind.
A small envelope.
Inside was a photograph of my father standing beside a man I didn't recognize.
On the back were three words.
ASK ABOUT SOFIA.
Adrian studied the photograph.
His expression darkened.
“That's Viktor Marković.”
I frowned.
“Who?”
“A former associate of my father.”
“What happened to him?”
“He disappeared twenty years ago.”
I stared.
“Disappeared?”
Adrian nodded.
“He was involved in a financial investigation.”
I looked at the photograph.
My father.
A missing businessman.
My mother.
A shipping network.
The pieces were beginning to form a picture I didn't want to see.
I looked at Adrian.
“Do you think my father hurt my mother?”
He hesitated.
“I think he knows more than he's told you.”
My eyes filled.
I looked away.
For years, my father had been the only family I had.
He'd chosen my schools.
My friends.
My clothes.
My husband.
I'd called it protection.
Now I wondered whether it had been control.
I swallowed.
“I want to call him.”
Adrian nodded.
“Then call him.”
I looked at him.
“You're not going to stop me?”
“No.”
I stared.
He continued.
“But I'd prefer you didn't tell him where we are until we understand who's behind the attack.”
I considered that.
Then nodded.
For the first time, Adrian had given me information instead of an order.
It changed something between us.
May you like
Not enough.
But something.
