Chapter 13 - THE TRUTH BENEATH THE LIGHTHOUSE

The final clue came from Milena.
She called from Montenegro.
Her voice trembled.
“Lena, I found something.”
“What?”
“A letter.”
My heart pounded.
“From my mother?”
“Yes.”
Milena explained that Sofia had hidden it beneath a loose floorboard in the old lighthouse near the estate.
Adrian and I returned immediately.
We reached the lighthouse at sunset.
The sea crashed against the rocks.
Inside, the air smelled of salt and old stone.
Adrian lifted the floorboard.
Beneath it lay a metal box.
Inside was a letter.
My hands shook as I opened it.
My darling Lena,
If you're reading this, it means the people I trusted have failed us.
I wanted to protect you from the men who believed money gave them the right to control our lives.
Your father was not always cruel. But he became frightened of losing what he thought belonged to him.
I discovered that he and Mikhail were using my company to move illegal funds. When I refused to cooperate, they threatened to take you away.
I disappeared because I believed it was the only way to keep you alive.
I am sorry for every birthday I missed. Every bedtime story I couldn't read. Every moment you needed me and I wasn't there.
I hope someday you understand that leaving was the hardest thing I ever did.
And I hope you never confuse love with ownership.
You are my daughter.
You belong to yourself.
Always.
Love, Mom.
I began crying.
Adrian stood beside me.
He didn't interrupt.
Didn't offer explanations.
He simply waited.
When I finally looked up, I whispered, “She's alive.”
Adrian nodded.
“Possibly.”
I stared at the letter.

For the first time, the possibility felt real.
And terrifying.
