Chapter 2 - THE HONEYMOON NOBODY EXPECTED

The private jet left New York just after midnight.
I sat beside the window, staring at the black ocean beneath us.
Adrian sat opposite me, reviewing documents on a tablet.
For three hours, he barely spoke.
Finally, I couldn't stand it.
“What did you mean about my mother?”
He looked up.
“Lena.”
“Don't.”
He lowered the tablet.
“Don't what?”
“Don't say my name like that. Like you're warning me not to ask questions.”
His expression tightened.
I leaned forward.
“My mother was named Sofia Hart. She died in a car accident when I was six years old. My father told me the brakes failed.”
Adrian studied me.
“Did you ever see the accident report?”
I frowned.
“No.”
“Her death certificate?”
“My father handled everything.”
“And her grave?”
I hesitated.
“We moved shortly afterward.”
Adrian said nothing.
I felt suddenly cold.
“What are you suggesting?”
He looked toward the dark window.
“I'm suggesting there are inconsistencies in the records.”
I stared.
“You investigated my mother?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
He hesitated.
Then answered.
“Because someone tried to kill you two weeks before our wedding.”
My breath caught.
“What?”
“The brake line on your car was deliberately damaged.”
I stared at him.
I remembered the accident.
The car losing control near the Hudson River.
The guardrail.
The terrifying moment before the vehicle stopped.
My father had called it mechanical failure.
Adrian leaned forward.
“Your father knew.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
“He asked me to keep it quiet.”
My hands began trembling.
“Why would he do that?”
May you like
Adrian's expression darkened.
“That's what we're going to find out.”
