Chapter 4 - The Doctor’s Smug Alibi

================================================================================

Dr. Reeves stopped dead in the center of the Persian rug, his eyes darting from the mass spectrometer to the black canister sitting inside a hermetic evidence container.

The arrogant smile on his face twitched, but he quickly scrambled to regain his professional composure.

"What is this equipment doing in your library, Nathan?" Reeves demanded, adjusting his silk tie. "I warned you that bringing unverified third-party consultants into your sons' treatment protocol would jeopardize their delicate stability!"

Nathan walked forward, not bothering to wipe the drop of blood from his palm where the crystal had cracked. He stopped twelve inches from the physician, towering over him like an immovable monolith.

"My sons are asleep in the East Wing, Malcolm," Nathan said in a voice as smooth and lethal as silk over steel. "And for the first time in five months, they aren't breathing the air from that canister."

Reeves’s throat made a dry, audible click. "Canister? What canister? Nathan, are you accusing me of something? I have dedicated six months of my life to finding a cure for Jacob and Jonah! I brought in neurologists from Johns Hopkins!"

I stepped out from the library shadows, holding the master HVAC blueprint and a digital tablet.

"You brought in specialists to muddy the diagnostic waters, Dr. Reeves," I said, looking him dead in the eye. "Every single specialist was given altered blood panels. You personally ran the boys' weekly lab tests at your private clinic, Reeves Diagnostic Laboratories in Stamford. You manually erased the elevated heavy metal biomarkers from the electronic health records."

Reeves scoffed, pointing an accusatory finger at me. "You are an uneducated nanny! You have no legal standing, no medical credentials, and no right to inspect confidential patient files!"

"She has every right," Nathan intervened, his voice vibrating with absolute authority. "Because as of ten minutes ago, Emily Dawson is the designated Medical Power of Attorney for my sons."

Nathan tapped his desk monitor, displaying a high-resolution surveillance feed from the basement maintenance hub timestamped three days earlier.

On the screen, Dr. Reeves was clearly visible in his tailored suit, using a master maintenance key to open the secondary HVAC access panel, swapping the depleted chemical canister with a fresh one, and resetting the digital timer.

The smug arrogance on Malcolm Reeves’s face dissolved into pure, unadulterated terror.
