Chapter 8 - The Raid on the Pier

While Arthur was placed in federal holding, his primary criminal associate—Marcus Kane, head of private maritime logistics for Vance Freight—attempted a desperate, midnight escape.

Kane was the man who had coordinated the Panamanian shell companies and held the offshore bank accounts containing $18 million in diverted trust funds.

At 1:30 AM, Kane and two armed associates were loading heavy titanium cases into the cabin of a forty-foot high-speed luxury yacht at the South Street Seaport in Lower Manhattan.

Suddenly, the black waters of the harbor erupted in blinding brilliance.

Floodlights from two NYPD harbor patrol cutters illuminated the pier, while a dozen tactical officers from the Tactical Response Unit surrounded the gangway with assault rifles raised.

“Marcus Kane! Step away from the vessel and put your hands above your head!” a megaphone boomed across the water.

Kane drew a concealed semi-automatic pistol, attempting to dive behind the yacht’s composite fuel tanks.

Crack!

A single precision disabling shot from an NYPD marksman struck Kane’s weapon, sending the gun clattering into the dark river. Tactical officers swarmed the dock, throwing Kane face-down onto the wet wooden planks and securing his wrists in heavy steel cuffs.

The titanium cases were pried open on the dock, revealing $18 million in negotiable bearer bonds, gold bullion, and the complete master server containing every fraudulent transaction executed by Arthur Vance over two decades.

Julian Hayes, standing on the pier in a heavy wool overcoat, watched as the evidence was loaded into secure federal transport vans.

He pulled out his phone and dialed Evelyn.

“It’s done, Evelyn,” Julian reported. “Every cent of Clara’s trust has been recovered intact. The syndicate is completely broken.”
