Chapter 6 - Chloe's Crumbling Throne

Back at Vance Manor, the gilded reality Chloe had inhabited for twenty-eight years was shattering into dust.

Chloe stood in the grand walk-in closet of her penthouse suite, frantically tossing designer handbags, diamond bracelets, and fur coats into open Louis Vuitton luggage.

Her phone rang continuously—calls from high-society brand sponsors terminating her ambassador contracts, country clubs revoking her VIP status, and her wealthy fiancé, Bradley Sinclair, demanding the immediate return of his family’s engagement ring.

The heavy double doors of her suite swung open.

Clara walked in, dressed in a simple, tailored ivory wool dress that had once belonged to her mother. Behind her stood Evelyn and two uniformed estate security officers.

Chloe froze, clutching a diamond necklace to her chest.

“What are you doing in my room?!” Chloe hissed, her voice shrill with venomous spite. “You think because you share Mom’s DNA, you can just walk in and steal my life? You’re still a dirty, uneducated servant who washes dishes for ten dollars an hour!”

Clara looked at her younger sister with calm, unshakable dignity.

“I didn't come to take your dresses, Chloe,” Clara said softly. “I came to ask you one question: When you saw me standing by the kitchen doors before the gala started… you recognized me, didn't you?”

Chloe’s breath caught. Her eyes darted away, unable to meet Clara’s steady gaze.

“You saw the silver locket around my neck when I checked your coat,” Clara continued, taking a step forward. “You saw the birthmark. And instead of telling Mom that her lost daughter was standing in the hall, you whispered to Arthur, and then you deliberately knocked that wine glass out of my hands so you could slap me in front of the room.”

Evelyn gasped, stepping forward with a look of absolute horror on her face. “Chloe… is that true? You knew?!”

Chloe’s facade crumbled into ugly, bitter tears. “Dad told me she would take everything! He told me if Clara came back, Bradley would leave me, the trust fund would be cut in half, and I’d be nobody! I worked my whole life to be the sole princess of this family! Why should she get everything just because she was born first?!”

Evelyn walked up to Chloe. For the first time in her life, the doting mother looked at her youngest child with cold, unyielding judgment.

“You didn't work for anything, Chloe,” Evelyn whispered, her voice trembling with heartbreak. “You lived on your sister’s stolen birthright while she scrubbed floors in the cold. You slapped her while she offered you a birthday blessing.”

Evelyn signaled the security officers.

“Take Miss Chloe’s keys, cancel all secondary corporate credit cards, and escort her to the guest cottage on the east perimeter,” Evelyn ordered. “From this moment on, Chloe will live on the allowance of a common clerk until she learns the value of human decency.”

Chloe wailed, dropping her diamond necklace onto the plush rug as the guards gently but firmly escorted her out of the room.
