Chapter 2 - The Locket on the Velvet Tray

The entire ballroom plunged into a dead, suffocating silence so deep that the soft humming of the air vents sounded like roaring wind.

Evelyn Vance took one trembling step forward, then another. She did not care about the broken glass crunching beneath her satin heels. She did not care that the cameras from three major high-society magazines were flashing in blinding bursts across the room.

“Clara…?” Evelyn breathed, dropping to both knees directly on the wine-stained marble beside the fallen server.

Evelyn’s manicured hands reached out, hovering over the girl’s bruised face, terrified that if she touched her, the image would dissolve into smoke. She brushed back the girl’s disheveled brown curls, revealing the small, star-shaped birthmark resting just beneath her left ear.

“Mother, stop!” Chloe shrieked, rushing forward and grabbing Evelyn’s arm with desperate, panicked force. “Don’t touch her! She’s an imposter! She’s just a thieving catering worker trying to stage an extortion scheme on my birthday!”

“Get your hands off me, Chloe!” Evelyn snapped with an icy authority that made the younger daughter recoil in terror.

The server slowly unbuttoned the top seam of her catering vest. From beneath the rough fabric, she pulled out a worn, tarnished silver pendant on a frayed silk cord.

It was a custom antique locket shaped like an ivy leaf.

Evelyn’s breath hitched in a violent sob. With shaking fingers, Evelyn pressed the hidden ruby clasp at the base of the leaf. The locket popped open.

Inside, protected beneath a thin sliver of crystal, was an engraved miniature portrait of a two-year-old Chloe and a four-year-old Clara sitting on the lawn of Vance Manor, alongside an inscription in Evelyn’s late husband’s handwriting: To Clara, the first light of our home.

“Daddy gave this to me before the man took me away from the carousel,” Clara whispered, her chin trembling.

Evelyn broke completely. She wrapped both arms around Clara’s trembling body, pulling the bleeding, wine-soaked girl tight against her diamond necklace and designer silk. She buried her face in Clara’s hair, rocking her back and forth as sob after sob tore through her chest.

“My baby… my sweet, beautiful baby girl,” Evelyn wept, tears washing away twenty years of grief. “You’re alive… you came back to me!”

Standing near the head of the banquet table, Arthur Vance—Evelyn’s second husband and Chloe’s father—stared at the scene with cold, murderous panic in his eyes.

He didn't shed a tear. Instead, his hand slid quietly inside his tailored tuxedo jacket, gripping his smartphone to send an encrypted emergency text: The package is alive. Scrub the upstate accounts immediately.
