Chapter 5 - The Stepfather's Hidden Ledger

While Evelyn was escorting Clara to the master family suite at Vance Manor in Westchester, Julian Hayes was executing an emergency court discovery order inside Arthur’s private Manhattan office.

Accompanied by two forensic accountants and Senior Detective Karen Vance of the NYPD Financial Crimes Division, Julian cracked the biometric safe concealed behind the oil painting in Arthur’s mahogany study.

Inside lay three thick ledgers bound in black leather, alongside dozens of encrypted USB drives and forged passport sets.

“Look at these transaction logs,” Julian Hayes said, shining a desk lamp over the faded banking receipts. “From November 2004 to the present day, Arthur has wired exactly $12,500 every single month to a private bank account in Plattsburgh, New York, registered to Martha Jenkins—the former governess.”

Detective Vance examined the wire authorization slips. “That’s a continuous retainer for child concealment and false imprisonment.”

“It’s worse than that,” Julian replied, clicking through a decrypted digital ledger. “Arthur didn't just hide Clara. He used her dormant trust shares as collateral to secure $45 million in private loans for his illicit offshore shipping ventures in Panama. He defaulted on those loans six months ago. His creditors were threatening to liquidate Vance Logistics.”

“Which is why he panicked when Clara appeared at the gala,” Detective Vance noted. “If Clara is legally alive, her trust cannot be used as collateral. The lenders will foreclose on Arthur personally by the end of the week.”

Julian’s eyes hardened into flint. “And when Arthur realized Clara was working for the catering company, he didn't just want her thrown out—he paid the head of banquet security ten thousand dollars to have Clara detained in the basement after midnight.”

Julian stood up, closing the heavy leather ledger with a resounding snap.

“This isn't just an inheritance dispute anymore, Detective,” Julian said. “This is a twenty-year conspiracy of Kidnapping for Financial Gain, Grand Larceny, and Human Trafficking under federal RICO statutes.”
