Chapter 8 - THE NIGHT CHICAGO STOPPED BREATHING

Olivia was found the following morning.

Alive.

Frightened.

Locked inside an abandoned storage facility near the river.

Police rescued her after receiving an anonymous tip.

She was taken to St. Catherine for examination.

I rushed to her room.

She grabbed me.

“Emma.”

I hugged her tightly.

“I'm here.”

She began crying.

“They thought I knew something.”

“About what?”

“The deliveries.”

I pulled back.

“What deliveries?”

Olivia wiped her face.

“I saw someone moving boxes out of the hospital loading area.”

“Who?”

She shook her head.

“I didn't recognize him.”

Then she whispered:

“But he had a tattoo.”

My stomach dropped.

“What kind?”

“A compass.”

I stared.

The same symbol.

Daniel Cross.

The man outside my apartment.

The people moving through the hospital.

Olivia continued.

“They asked whether I'd told you.”

I felt cold.

“Me?”

She nodded.

“They kept asking about Emma Reed.”

I stepped backward.

Why would anyone care about me?

I was a nurse.

I didn't control shipments.

I didn't know anything about the Moretti family.

Then I remembered the first night.

The black sedan.

The stranger behind the wheel.

And the men who had watched me climb out.

May you like

Someone had seen me with Adrian.

And assumed I mattered to him.
