Chapter 13 - THE WOMAN WHO CHOSE TO STAY

The months that followed were complicated.

The investigation continued.

Several businesses connected to the Moretti family underwent financial review.

Adrian stepped away from criminal associates and began restructuring his legitimate operations.

It wasn't easy.

He lost money.

Influence.

And people he had once trusted.

But he kept going.

Meanwhile, I returned to a normal schedule at St. Catherine.

Olivia recovered.

Daniel Cross entered a witness protection program after cooperating with investigators.

And the hospital implemented stricter controls over its supply chain.

For the first time in months, life began to feel ordinary.

Then Adrian asked me to dinner again.

I said yes.

We walked along the river afterward.

Snow drifted through the streetlights.

He took off his coat and offered it to me.

I laughed.

“I'm wearing three layers.”

“Chicago winter doesn't care.”

I accepted the coat.

Then looked at him.

“Adrian?”

“Yes?”

“Are you afraid?”

He seemed surprised.

“Of what?”

“Losing everything.”

He considered the question.

“Yes.”

I nodded.

“Good.”

He raised an eyebrow.

“Good?”

“Fear is useful when it tells you something matters.”

He stared.

Then smiled.

“You remembered.”

“Of course.”

He stopped walking.

“Emma.”

I looked up.

“Can I kiss you?”

My heart raced.

“Yes.”

He leaned down.

The kiss was gentle.

Unhurried.

May you like

And completely different from anything I had expected.

For the first time, I understood that the most intimidating man in Chicago could also be the gentlest person in a room.
