Chapter 5 - THE MAN WHO WALKED INTO TRAUMA THREE

I didn't call Adrian.
I called hospital security.
Then I documented the patient's statement.
His name was Daniel Cross.
At least, that was the name on the identification found in his pocket.
He refused to explain his injuries.
He refused to identify his attackers.
And when detectives arrived, he became completely silent.
By afternoon, his condition had improved.
But his fear hadn't.
I was checking his IV when he grabbed my sleeve.
“You know Moretti?”
I hesitated.
“Why?”
He stared at me.
“I saw you outside his car.”
My heart skipped.
“You were there?”
He nodded.
“The night at the hospital.”
I remembered the men in dark coats.
The black SUV.
The way everyone seemed to be watching Adrian.
“What happened to you?”
Daniel swallowed.
“I tried to warn him.”
“About what?”
He looked toward the door.
Then whispered:
“Someone inside his organization is planning to kill him.”
Before I could answer, the door opened.
Adrian Moretti walked into trauma three.
He wore a dark overcoat.
His expression was unreadable.
Two men stood outside.
Daniel went pale.
“Adrian,” he whispered.
Adrian looked at him.
Then at me.
“Emma.”
I stared.
“What are you doing here?”
He glanced toward Daniel.
“Visiting someone I know.”
I stepped between them.
“He's my patient.”
Adrian stopped.
For a moment, his eyes narrowed.
Then he nodded.
“Understood.”
Daniel began shaking.
Adrian noticed.
His expression changed.
“Daniel.”
The injured man looked away.
Adrian's voice softened.
“Who did this to you?”
May you like
Daniel whispered:
“Your brother.”
