Chapter 7 - THE SECRET IN THE REFRIGERATED TRUCKS

The hospital launched an internal review.

I reported the unusual deliveries through the proper channels.

Security examined receiving logs.

Administrators contacted law enforcement.

The records showed several shipments from a company called Northbridge Medical Logistics.

The company had recently won a contract to transport temperature-sensitive medical supplies.

But some deliveries had arrived without complete documentation.

Others were signed for by employees who claimed they had never seen them.

The hospital suspended the vendor pending investigation.

I thought that would be the end of it.

Then Olivia disappeared.

She had finished her shift at nine.

She never reached home.

Her phone went straight to voicemail.

Her car remained in the employee parking garage.

I called the police.

Then I called Adrian.

He answered immediately.

“Emma?”

“Olivia's missing.”

Silence.

“Your friend from pediatrics?”

“Yes.”

“Have you called the police?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

His voice became colder.

“Where are you?”

“At the hospital.”

“Stay with security.”

I swallowed.

“Adrian, I'm scared.”

There was a pause.

Then he said something I would remember for the rest of my life.

“You should be. Fear is useful when it tells you something matters.”

May you like

My eyes filled.

“But don't let it make your decisions for you.”
