Chapter 11 - THE BROTHER WHO CROSSED THE LINE
Luca Moretti was arrested two weeks later.
Investigators had obtained shipping records, witness statements, and financial documents linking him to the unauthorized deliveries.
Several members of the Ferraro organization were also detained.
The investigation uncovered a scheme involving fraudulent medical supply invoices and illegal cargo concealed within commercial shipments.
Adrian cooperated with authorities.
That decision shocked everyone.
His own associates questioned him.
Some threatened to leave.
Others accused him of betraying the family.
But Adrian refused to back down.
One evening, he called me.
“Emma.”
“Yes?”
“They arrested Luca.”
I closed my eyes.
“I'm sorry.”
He was silent.
Then said:
“He's my brother.”
“I know.”
“I should have seen it.”
“You couldn't control his choices.”
Adrian exhaled.
“I spent years trying to control everything.”
I sat on my couch.
“And?”
“I'm beginning to understand how little that accomplished.”
I smiled sadly.
“That's a start.”
He was quiet for a moment.
Then asked:
“Can I see you?”
I hesitated.
“Not tonight.”
A pause.
“All right.”
No anger.
No pressure.
No argument.

Just acceptance.
And somehow, that made me want to see him more.
