Chapter 7 - THE SHIPMENT THAT NEVER EXISTED

The shipping records revealed a disturbing pattern.
Containers labeled as specialized medical equipment had been moving through Cross-controlled docks.
Some carried legitimate supplies.
Others had documentation that didn't match their declared contents.
Celia Voss's companies appeared repeatedly.
Donovan had authorized several transfers.
And a number of invoices had been altered.
Vincent's independent auditors identified the discrepancies.
They referred the findings to appropriate authorities.
The investigation widened.
Meanwhile, Fay's mother received an unexpected letter.
Her hospital had been notified that certain treatment-related charges were under review.
Rose showed Fay the document.
“What does this mean?”
Fay read it carefully.
“I think they're checking the billing.”
Rose frowned.
“Why?”
Fay hesitated.
Then said:
“Because someone may have been using the hospital's name for things they shouldn't.”
Rose studied her.
“Does this have anything to do with your job?”
Fay looked down.
“Yes.”
Her mother sighed.
“Fay.”
“I know.”
Rose took her hand.
“Promise me something.”
“What?”
“If staying there becomes dangerous, you'll leave.”
Fay nodded.
“I promise.”
That evening, Vincent received a call from Elias.
“We found something.”
“What?”
“Celia's company has been billing for temperature-controlled shipments that never reached the listed facilities.”
Vincent's jaw tightened.
“Where did they go?”
Elias hesitated.
“That's what investigators are trying to determine.”
Vincent looked at the file.
Then asked:
“And Rose Miller?”
Elias paused.
“Her name appears in a list of patients connected to one of the questionable billing programs.”
Vincent closed his eyes.
The threat against Fay's mother had not been random.
May you like
Someone had chosen Rose because she was vulnerable.
And because Fay loved her enough to do almost anything to keep her alive.
