Chapter 5 - THE SECRET FAY HAD FORGOTTEN

Fay remembered the second envelope three days later.
She was sitting in Mrs. Alvarez's office, drinking tea.
Her jaw was healing.
The swelling had begun to fade.
But sleep remained difficult.
Every time she closed her eyes, she remembered Donovan's hand.
Then something else surfaced.
A conversation.
Two men in the eastern corridor.
A woman in silver.
Fay put down her cup.
“Mrs. Alvarez?”
The older woman looked up.
“Yes, sweetheart?”
“I think I heard something.”
Mrs. Alvarez waited.
“Before Donovan attacked me.”
“What?”
Fay closed her eyes.
She remembered the woman's voice.
Low.
Impatient.
“Tell him the shipment is already at Saint Anne's.”
Then Donovan.
“What about the girl?”
The woman had laughed.
“She doesn't know anything.”
Fay opened her eyes.
Her heart was pounding.
“Mrs. Alvarez, I think they were talking about me.”
The older woman went still.
“Are you sure?”
Fay shook her head.
“No.”
Then whispered:
“But I think they knew my mother was there.”
Mrs. Alvarez reached for her phone.
“I'm calling Mr. Cross.”
Fay caught her hand.
“Wait.”
Mrs. Alvarez looked at her.
May you like
Fay took a breath.
“I want to tell him myself.”
