Chapter 11 - THE TRUTH ABOUT CELIA VOSS

Celia Voss was arrested six weeks later.

Investigators alleged that companies connected to her had participated in fraudulent medical logistics billing and improper diversion of funds.

Donovan faced separate charges related to his assault on Fay and his unauthorized return to the estate.

The broader financial investigation continued.

Vincent cooperated through counsel and provided records from the Cross businesses.

Several executives resigned.

Contracts were terminated.

Independent compliance officers were appointed.

The process was painful.

And expensive.

But Vincent refused to bury the findings.

One evening, Fay asked him:

“Why are you doing all this?”

They were sitting on her balcony.

The city glowed beneath them.

Vincent looked toward the skyline.

“Because I was wrong.”

Fay studied him.

He continued.

“I believed I could control everything.”

He paused.

“But I didn't even know what was happening inside my own businesses.”

She nodded.

“And now?”

Vincent smiled faintly.

“Now I'm learning that responsibility is harder than power.”

Fay laughed softly.

“Good.”

He looked at her.

“Good?”

She nodded.

“Maybe it should be.”

Vincent smiled.

Then reached for her hand.

He paused.

“May I?”

Fay smiled.

“Yes.”

Their fingers intertwined.

May you like

And for the first time in years, Vincent Cross felt something he had never been able to command.

Peace.
