Chapter 13 - THE MAN WHO CHOSE A DIFFERENT LIFE

Vincent began separating his legitimate businesses from the criminal operations he'd inherited.
He worked with independent attorneys.
Auditors.
Regulators.
And law enforcement.
Some associates resisted.
Some partnerships collapsed.
Several investigations widened.
But Vincent refused to return to the old system.
He knew he couldn't erase the past.
He couldn't undo every mistake.
He couldn't pretend his family name had never caused harm.
But he could stop protecting wrongdoing.
One afternoon, he visited his father's grave.
The cemetery overlooked the river.
He stood beside the headstone.
“You taught me that fear was the only language people understood.”
The wind moved through the trees.
Vincent looked down.
“I believed you.”
He paused.
“For years.”
Then he thought of Fay.
A frightened young woman sitting on a kitchen floor.
Holding frozen peas against her bruised face.
Afraid that telling the truth would cost her mother's life.
Vincent closed his eyes.
“I was wrong.”
He stood quietly for a long time.
Then turned and walked away.
May you like
He had inherited an empire built on fear.
Now he was determined to leave something different behind.
