Chapter 14 - THE CHOICE THAT BELONGED TO HER

A year passed.
Elena's parents continued recovering.
Margaret's condition stabilized.
Thomas regained enough independence to volunteer at a research ethics organization.
Elena became director of patient advocacy at the nonprofit clinic.
She built a life she was proud of.
And slowly, she allowed Dante back into it.
They started with coffee.
Then dinner.
Then long walks through the city.
They talked about the past.
About regret.
About forgiveness.
About the difference between love and control.
Dante never asked her to forget what his family had done.
Elena never pretended his efforts erased the past.
But they learned to be honest with each other.
One evening, they returned to the Moretti estate.
The ballroom was empty.
No chandeliers glittered.
No guests laughed.
Elena stood near the spot where Vanessa had humiliated her.
Dante approached.
“Do you remember that night?”
Elena smiled sadly.
“How could I forget?”
He took a breath.
“I should have stopped it sooner.”
“Yes.”
“I should have told you the truth about the engagement.”
“Yes.”
He looked down.
“I'm sorry.”
Elena studied him.
“I know.”
He reached for her hand.
She let him take it.
“Elena, I can't change what happened here.”
“No.”
“But I can promise never to make you feel invisible again.”
Her eyes filled.
She smiled.
“Then start by dancing with me.”
Dante laughed softly.
“There's no music.”
Elena stepped closer.
“We don't need it.”
He wrapped an arm around her waist.

They moved slowly beneath the dark chandeliers.
And for the first time, the ballroom held a memory Elena wanted to keep.
