Chapter 11 - THE FALL OF RICHARD BENNETT
Richard Bennett was arrested six months after the engagement party.
Investigators charged him with financial fraud, conspiracy, witness intimidation, and offenses connected to Thomas Carter's abduction.
Vanessa was also investigated for her role in threatening Margaret and participating in the financial arrangements.
The case attracted national attention.
Reporters gathered outside the courthouse.
Cameras flashed.
Richard walked past them without speaking.
Vanessa tried to hide her face.
Elena stood across the street with her attorney.
She didn't smile.
She didn't celebrate.
She simply watched.
For years, she had believed her family's suffering was the result of bad luck.
Now the truth was public.
Sarah looked at her.
“How do you feel?”
Elena considered.
“Tired.”
Sarah nodded.
“That's understandable.”
Elena looked toward the courthouse.
“I thought this would feel like winning.”
Sarah's voice softened.
“Justice doesn't always feel like victory.”
Elena nodded.
Then turned away.
She had a mother to care for.
A father to reconnect with.
May you like
And a future to build.
The Bennetts no longer deserved to occupy the center of her life.
