Chapter 10 - THE PRICE OF A STOLEN LIFE

Thomas Carter's testimony changed everything.
He remembered discovering that Bennett Biomedical had concealed dangerous defects in its treatment delivery system.
He had prepared to report the findings.
Richard Bennett learned of his plans.
Thomas was abducted before he could testify.
He suffered a severe head injury during the ordeal.
The men responsible transferred him to a private facility under a false identity.
His memory problems made it difficult for him to identify himself.
Over time, the people controlling his care changed.
The original conspirators lost track of him.
But Thomas survived.
Investigators began building a case.
Financial records linked Richard Bennett to the disputed patent transfer.
Old shipping documents connected the disappearance to the Moretti logistics network.
Dante cooperated.
He turned over company records.
He authorized an independent audit.
And he accepted that the investigation might expose wrongdoing within his own organization.
Elena watched from a distance.
She was grateful.
But she was not ready to forgive.
One evening, Dante called her.
“Elena.”
“Yes?”
“I need to tell you something.”
She waited.
“My father's company helped move your father.”
Silence.
Dante continued.
“I didn't know at the time. But that doesn't change what happened.”
Elena closed her eyes.
“Thank you for telling me.”
“I understand if you never want to see me again.”
Her voice trembled.
“I don't know what I want.”
Dante swallowed.
“Then take your time.”
May you like
For once, he didn't try to solve the problem.
He simply listened.
