Chapter 13 - THE MAN WHO LEARNED TO LOVE WITHOUT POWER
Dante changed his life.
He separated legitimate businesses from criminal operations.
He replaced compromised executives.
He cooperated with investigators examining the Moretti family's past.
The process cost him money.
Influence.
And relationships he had once believed were unbreakable.
But he continued.
One evening, he visited the nonprofit clinic where Elena worked.
He didn't arrive with bodyguards.
He didn't bring expensive gifts.
He came to attend a public fundraising event.
Elena saw him near the back of the room.
He looked different.
Less guarded.
Still serious.
But no longer surrounded by people afraid to disagree with him.
After the event, he approached.
“Hello, Elena.”
She smiled faintly.
“Hello, Dante.”
He hesitated.
“How are your parents?”
“Better.”
“I'm glad.”
Silence.
Then Elena asked:
“Why did you come?”
Dante looked at her.
“Because I believe in what you're doing.”
She studied him.
“And?”
He smiled sadly.
“And because I wanted to see you.”
Elena's heart tightened.
She looked down.
“I don't know if I can trust you.”
Dante nodded.
“I understand.”
“Your family helped destroy mine.”
“I know.”
She looked up.
“Then why are you still here?”
His voice softened.
“Because I love you.”
Elena froze.
Dante continued.
“But loving you doesn't mean I'm entitled to another chance.”
Her eyes filled.
He stepped back.
“I just wanted you to know.”
Then he left.
Elena watched him go.
