Chapter 12 - THE WOMAN WHO REBUILT HER FAMILY

Margaret Carter cried when she saw Thomas again.

They met in a rehabilitation center.

Thomas entered slowly, using a cane.

Margaret sat beside the window.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Thomas whispered:

“Meg.”

Margaret covered her mouth.

He smiled through tears.

“You still hate that nickname?”

She laughed.

Then began crying.

Elena stepped outside.

She gave them privacy.

Through the glass, she watched her parents hold hands.

Thirteen years had been stolen.

No court could return them.

But the years ahead still belonged to them.

Margaret's medical team arranged a revised treatment plan.

Thomas continued rehabilitation.

The family moved into a small accessible home near the hospital.

Elena found work coordinating patient support services at a nonprofit clinic.

She liked the job.

She understood the fear of medical bills.

The exhaustion of waiting rooms.

The humiliation of asking for help.
