Chapter 9 - The Gavel of the Don

The ballroom exploded into an uproar of outrage and disgust. Capos slammed their fists onto the table, while international delegates backed away from the chained traitors.
Senior Special Agent Marcus Stone of the Italian Financial Police (Guardia di Finanza) and two federal prosecutors stepped onto the platform, holding unsealed indictments.
"Vittorio Marchetti, Lucian Vance," Prosecutor Rossi announced with unyielding authority. "You are under arrest for Conspiracy to Commit Capital Murder, Corporate Embezzlement, Cross-Border Arms Trafficking, and the Premeditated Homicide of Mateo Rinaldi under federal anti-mafia statutes."
Vittorio collapsed to his knees, weeping in pathetic, ragged gasps as federal marshals hauled him and Lucian toward the waiting transport vans outside.
Aldo turned back to the room. He did not sit; he stood tall at the head of the table, placing his hand gently on Elia’s shoulder.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Aldo spoke, commanding absolute, reverent silence across the hall. "Six years ago, a man named Mateo Rinaldi gave his life to preserve the honor of this house. Today, his daughter Elia saved it a second time."
Aldo lifted his glass of pure water.
"Effective today, by decree of the Marchetti Testamentary Trust, Elia Rinaldi is legally adopted as my sole daughter and the primary heir to Marchetti Global Logistics. The Rinaldi mountain estate is fully restored under her name as an endowed sanctuary for working animals and orphaned children."
The forty delegates and capos rose to their feet in a unanimous, thunderous standing ovation.
