Chapter 7 - The Poison in the Meat

At 1:15 PM, forty-five minutes before the grand banquet, Vittorio slipped into the estate's rear service corridor leading to the primary kennel facility.

He held a secondary package wrapped in butcher paper—two thick cuts of prime sirloin laced with fast-acting paralytic neurotoxins.

"Stupid beasts," Vittorio muttered under his breath, stepping toward the kennel enclosure. "If you had torn that orphan to shreds last night like you were supposed to, I wouldn't have to get my hands dirty."

He approached the iron gate, holding out the poisoned meat with a long pair of tongs.

Rocco and Ulisse were standing in the shadows of the run. Their ears were flat, their hackles raised like rows of steel spikes along their spines, their yellow eyes fixed on Vittorio with unnatural, predatory stillness.

They did not rush the meat. They did not salivate.

Suddenly, a low, rhythmic whistle echoed from the arbor behind him.

Vittorio spun around, dropping the meat onto the concrete.

Standing at the entrance of the courtyard, holding two braided leather leads, was twelve-year-old Elia. Flanking her were four heavily armed Black Watch tactical operators in dark uniforms, their assault rifles raised and locked onto Vittorio’s chest.

"They only take meat from people with clean hands, Vittorio," Elia said, her voice echoing off the stone walls with chilly precision.

"You little street rat!" Vittorio snarled, reaching inside his jacket for his concealed pistol.

SNARL.

Rocco and Ulisse vaulted over the eight-foot reinforced partition wall in a single, synchronized explosion of black muscle.

They hit Vittorio before his hand could clear his lapel.

Rocco’s jaws clamped onto Vittorio’s right forearm, twisting the weapon from his grip in a shower of sparks, while Ulisse pinned Vittorio’s chest flat against the stone pavers, his massive, razor-sharp fangs hovering half an inch above Vittorio’s jugular.

Vittorio screamed, a high, piercing wail of absolute terror, his platinum watch shattering against the ground as he soaked himself in fear.

"Don't move, Vittorio," Marco’s voice boomed as tactical operators surrounded the courtyard, securing his legs in heavy steel restraints. "Or they won't leave enough of you to fill a shoe box."
