Chapter 6 - The Ledger of the Burned Kennel

At 11:30 AM, Elia walked into Aldo’s third-floor study.

She was dressed in a soft, tailored navy wool sweater and pleated skirt, her dark curls combed neatly, looking healthy, radiant, and dignified. But her face was pale with urgent gravity.

She walked directly to the desk where Aldo was reviewing shipping contracts with Marco.

"Don Aldo," Elia said, her voice clear and unwavering.

Aldo looked up, his expression softening instantly into warmth. "Elia. Are you feeling better, little bird?"

"Vittorio is going to poison your wine at the two o'clock gala," Elia stated without hesitation.

Marco’s hand moved to his holster in an instant. The air in the study turned freezing cold.

Aldo leaned back in his leather executive chair, his dark eyes narrowing into razor slits of lethal focus. "Tell me everything you heard, Elia."

Elia recounted the exact conversation from the wine cellar: the amber vial of cyanide, the mention of Lucian Vance, and the truth about the mountain fire that had taken her father's life three years ago.

Marco tapped his tablet, accessing the private communications logs of the estate’s internal Wi-Fi network.

Within ninety seconds, the encrypted data was cracked:

The Wire Transfers: €250,000 sent from Vittorio’s corporate expense account to an offshore entity registered to Lucian Vance.

The Real Estate Fraud: Forged deed filings transferring Mateo Rinaldi’s mountain valley acreage into Vittorio’s private holding LLC two weeks after the fire.

The Poison Procurement: Decrypted text messages between Vittorio and an unlicensed chemical supplier in Genoa confirming the delivery of the amber vial this morning.

Aldo did not shout. He did not slam his desk.

He slowly stood up, walked to the panoramic window overlooking the grand garden terrace where fifty international delegates were beginning to arrive in limousines, and folded his hands behind his back.

"Marco," Aldo said, his voice dropping into a register that made the windowpanes vibrate with silent menace.

"Yes, Don Aldo?"

"Do not alter the catering arrangements. Let my nephew pour the wine."

Aldo turned to Elia, kneeling down and resting a warm, calloused hand on her shoulder.

"You avenged your father today, Elia," Aldo murmured. "Now watch how a Don protects his daughter."
