Chapter 9 - The Gavel of Truth

Six months later, Courtroom 4A of the United States District Court in Lower Manhattan was packed to maximum capacity for the sentencing of Jason Thorne and his co-conspirators.
Sitting in the front row of the gallery were Elena and me, our hands interlaced, dressed in elegant formal attire.
Chief Judge Evelyn Sterling took the bench with absolute judicial severity.
“In the matter of the United States versus Jason Thorne,” Judge Sterling declared, her voice echoing through the stone chamber. “The defendant engaged in a depraved, calculated campaign of patricide, grand corporate espionage, and premeditated attempted murder against his own family.”
The judge brought down her heavy wooden gavel with a resounding crack.
“Jason Thorne is hereby sentenced to Life Imprisonment without the possibility of parole, to be served at the United States Penitentiary, ADX Florence Supermax.”
Jason collapsed forward onto the defense table, sobbing in broken, helpless gasps as federal marshals hauled him through the iron holding door forever.
Judge Sterling then turned her gaze toward Elena Vance.
“The court officially commends Special Agent Elena Vance for extraordinary heroism, unparalleled undercover resilience, and the recovery of fifty million dollars in stolen public assets.”
The entire courtroom rose in a thunderous, standing ovation.

Elena smiled, her eyes shining with tears of profound vindication as she leaned into my shoulder.
Justice was absolute, complete, and unshakeable.
