Chapter 4 - The Vault Beneath the Pier

We drove through the rain-drenched streets of Brooklyn under the cover of a thick midnight fog, our headlights off, navigating by thermal night-vision sensors.
At Pier 54, the rain lashed violently against the corrugated iron shipping containers.
Elena led me into an abandoned customs office beneath the pier piling. Behind an ancient industrial electrical junction box sat a heavy steel firebox sealed with a biometric keypad.
Elena pressed her thumb against the scanner.
Beep. Click.
The vault door swung open, revealing the items my brother Raymond had risked his life to preserve:
An audio cassette tape labeled Raymond — For Victor's Eyes Only.
A cryptographic ledger containing the complete offshore banking routes of the Falcone syndicate.
A sealed medical toxicology vial containing traces of Aconite—the rare plant toxin Jason had slipped into Raymond’s morning espresso nine years ago.
I picked up the cassette player and pressed play.
My brother Raymond’s voice echoed through the cold concrete room, sounding tired, broken, and filled with agonizing sorrow:
“Victor... if you’re listening to this, I am already gone. Jason has made a pact with Falcone. He thinks I am too soft for this world. He wants our empire, and he will kill anyone who stands between him and the throne. Protect yourself, brother. Do not let my son destroy the soul of our family.”
Tears of pure, burning fury welled in my eyes, but I did not let them fall.

I gently placed the tape into my pocket and turned to Elena.
“Elena,” I said, looking into her steady hazel eyes. “Tonight, we avenge Raymond. And tomorrow, you take your rightful place by my side.”
