Chapter 3 - The Tunnel of the Bloodline

With the silence of practiced phantoms, Elena and I slid open the false panel behind the cedar shoe rack.

The hidden passage was a narrow concrete chute equipped with an iron ladder descending forty feet into the subterranean foundations of the estate. I pulled the panel shut, locking the magnetic latch from the inside, plunging us into complete darkness until Elena clicked on a miniature red-beam tactical penlight.

We moved quickly through the cool damp tunnel, the sound of Jason’s muffled pacing above fading into nothingness.

“Why didn't you tell me three years ago, Elena?” I asked in a low whisper as we reached the iron gate of the lower cellar.

“Because three years ago, you worshipped Jason’s name,” Elena replied honestly, unlocking the iron grate with a duplicate brass key. “If I had walked up to the Don of New York and claimed his beloved nephew was a fratricidal traitor, you would have had me buried under the concrete piers before sunset.”

I stayed silent because she was right.

We reached the subterranean motor pool beneath the detached garage. Parked in the dark was my secondary armored Suburban—unmonitored by the house grid, equipped with an independent satellite communications array and two heavy-weapons cases.

I opened the trunk, pulling out two tactical Kevlar vests, a suppressed MP5 submachine gun, and my private satellite phone.

I dialed the private encrypted frequency for Marcus Cole—my lifelong enforcer and the commander of my three hundred private dock guards in Brooklyn.

The call connected on the first ring.

“Marcus,” I said.

“Boss? Where are you? Jason told the captains you were ambushed in Manhattan!” Marcus’s voice exploded with fury and panic.

“Jason is the ambush, Marcus,” I answered, my voice dropping into a register of cold, absolute authority. “He has five minutes before he realizes I slipped through his fingers. Lock down Terminal 4, mobilize the Black Watch security team, and prepare Warehouse 9 for an incoming hit squad.”

“Understood, Don Victor. What about Jason?”

“Leave Jason to me.”
