Chapter 6 - The Night of the Silent Alarm

Thursday night arrived under a blanket of heavy, starless black clouds over the New Jersey hills.
Upstairs in the private surgical pavilion in Manhattan, Lily’s procedure had been completed with textbook perfection four hours earlier. She was resting comfortably in the penthouse recovery suite under the personal care of Dr. Bennett and four armed guards, with Anna holding her sleeping hand.
Back at the Moretti manor, the sprawling grounds were bathed in complete, deceptive silence.
The exterior floodlights flickered off at precisely 11:45 PM, exactly as Evelyn had promised her handlers.
At 12:15 AM, two black tactical vans rolled quietly through the wooded access road, stopping near the unlocked rear service gate.
Twelve armed mercenaries in black tactical gear and night-vision goggles stepped out into the damp gravel, led by Victor Lucian himself.
“Move quietly,” Lucian hissed into his throat mic. “First squad clears the guard station. Second squad breaches Moretti’s private quarters. Take no prisoners.”
They moved across the lawn like shadows, breaching the rear service threshold where the new smooth ramp had been completed only hours earlier.
The moment the twelfth mercenary stepped across the threshold, the world exploded into blinding white light.
Forty high-output stadium halogen floodlights illuminated every square inch of the courtyard, turning night into day.
From the surrounding balconies, rooftops, and stone archways, thirty elite Moretti tactical operators appeared with weapons locked and loaded.
“Drop your weapons!” Marco’s voice boomed through the master public address system.
Lucian spun around, raising his automatic rifle in a panic.
Crack!
A single precision disabling round from my sniper rifle shattered Lucian’s weapon, sending the mangled receiver flying from his grip and throwing him onto the wet gravel.
“Hold your fire!” Lucian screamed, clutching his bleeding hand as thirty red laser sights painted his chest and forehead.
Within forty-five seconds, all twelve mercenaries were disarmed, pinned face-down onto the newly paved ramp, and secured in heavy steel handcuffs.
I walked down the stone stairs, dressed in a dark wool overcoat, stepping onto the threshold.

I looked down at Victor Lucian, who was glaring up at me with terrified, bloodshot eyes.
“You’re trespassing on private property, Victor,” I said calmly. “And you’re getting blood on my new ramp.”
