Chapter 5 - The Syndicate’s Shadow

In the subterranean security command center beneath the manor, the multi-screen surveillance wall hummed with electric blue light.
Marco brought up the decrypted text threads extracted from Evelyn Crane’s hidden device.
The messages spanned six months, communicating with a classified contact labeled V.L.—Victor Lucian, the ruthless boss of the rival Lucian crime syndicate based in northern New Jersey.
V.L. (3 weeks ago): ‘Ensure the exterior camera blind spots along the east perimeter garden remain uncalibrated. The shipment of security access codes must be delivered before the 15th.’
Evelyn: ‘Understood. The $50,000 wire was received. Moretti is focused on his European port expansion. The house is vulnerable.’
V.L. (Yesterday): ‘We move on the estate Thursday night while Moretti’s security detail is rotated. Leave the rear service gate unlocked.’
My jaw tightened into an unyielding block of iron.
“So Evelyn wasn’t just a common thief,” I murmured, my eyes narrowing into cold slits of lethal focus. “She was an inside asset preparing to open the gates of my home to Lucian’s hit squad.”
“If you hadn’t caught her in the kitchen this morning over the $8,400,” Marco noted, a chill in his voice, “Lucian’s crew would have breached the east wing while you slept on Thursday.”
I looked at the floor plans displayed on the screen.
Anna and Lily had been living in the basement quarters directly adjacent to the rear service gate—the exact point of entry Lucian’s mercenaries intended to blow open with tactical explosives. If Evelyn’s plot had succeeded, an innocent mother and child would have been slaughtered in the crossfire just to facilitate a mob raid.
“They thought they found a blind spot,” I said softly, a deadly smile touching my lips. “Marco.”
“Yes, Boss?”
“Do not alter the rotation schedules. Let Lucian think the gate will be unlocked on Thursday night.”

I checked the slide of my customized Kimber .45 on the armory table.
“We are going to welcome Mr. Lucian into our home with the hospitality he deserves.”
