Chapter 4 - The Top Pediatric Surgeon

At 2:00 PM, a private helicopter bearing the medical insignia of Johns Hopkins landed on the estate’s private helipad on the north lawn.
Dr. Richard Bennett, the world’s preeminent pediatric orthopedic surgeon, walked into the third-floor sunlit suite accompanied by two specialized pediatric physical therapists.
The room had already been transformed. Soft ivory down blankets covered the king-sized bed, toys and coloring books were stacked neatly by the window, and a silver tray loaded with fresh fruit, warm pastries, and apple juice sat on the low mahogany table.
Lily sat propped up on the pillows, giggling as Dr. Bennett gently examined the mobility of her right ankle and knee.
“Look here, Matteo,” Dr. Bennett said, displaying the high-resolution digital X-rays on his tablet. “The deformity is entirely correctable. The previous clinic misdiagnosed the tendon contracture and fitted her with an improper, rigid brace that was actually aggravating the joint inflammation.”
Anna stood beside the bed, clutching her hands to her chest, barely daring to breathe. “Can... can she walk normally, Doctor?”
“With a minimally invasive tendon lengthening procedure and six weeks of modern aquatic physical therapy,” Dr. Bennett smiled warmly, “she won’t just walk. She’ll be running and jumping without a single piece of metal on her leg.”
Anna buried her face in her hands, dropping into a chair as sob after sob of pure, overwhelming relief broke from her chest. For four years, doctors had told her that specialized surgeries were reserved for private-insurance aristocrats, demanding hundreds of thousands of dollars she could never earn in three lifetimes.
I stepped over, resting a firm, reassuring hand on Anna’s trembling shoulder. “I promised you, Anna. Lily gets the best care this country can provide.”
Dr. Bennett turned to me, his tone shifting into professional gravity. “We can schedule the procedure for Thursday morning at the private surgical pavilion in Manhattan.”
“Prepare the medical jet,” I told Marco. “We take off at sunrise.”

Just then, Marco’s encrypted phone buzzed with an urgent priority alert.
He leaned in close, whispering into my ear: “Boss. We decrypted Evelyn Crane’s private burner phone from the safe. You need to see this.”
