Chapter 10 - THE MAN WHO HAD TO LET HER GO

Lorenzo returned to Colorado with the findings.
Amelia listened carefully.
Then asked one question.
“Is Daniel alive?”
Lorenzo nodded.
“Investigators located him. He's receiving medical care.”
Amelia covered her mouth.
Tears streamed down her cheeks.
“He's alive?”
“Yes.”
She began sobbing.
Lorenzo remained seated.
He wanted to hold her.
But he waited.
After several minutes, Amelia looked up.
“Can I see him?”
“Of course.”
She wiped her cheeks.
Then whispered, “Thank you.”
Lorenzo shook his head.
“You don't owe me thanks.”
She stared.
He continued.
“I should have noticed something was wrong before the wedding.”
Amelia looked down.
“You couldn't have known.”
He swallowed.
“Maybe not.”
Then he looked at her.
“But I should never have frightened you when I found you.”
Her eyes filled.
He continued.
“I grabbed you. I shouted at you. I made you believe I might hurt you.”
His voice broke.
“That was wrong.”
Amelia looked away.
Lorenzo took a breath.
“I love you.”
She closed her eyes.
“But loving you doesn't give me the right to control you.”
For a long moment, neither spoke.
Then he said, “If you want to leave, I won't stop you.”
May you like
Amelia began crying.
Because for the first time, he meant it.
