Chapter 14 - THE HOUSE WITH OPEN DOORS

One year later, Amelia opened a small art restoration studio in Chicago.
She had always loved restoring old paintings.
Before the wedding, she'd planned to pursue the work after marrying Lorenzo.
Now she wanted to build the business herself.
The studio occupied a renovated brick building near the river.
Large windows filled the rooms with light.
Paintings stood on easels.
Brushes lined the shelves.
And a small brass plaque beside the entrance read:
AMELIA CARMICHAEL — ART RESTORATION
Lorenzo arrived on opening morning carrying a bouquet of white peonies.
Amelia smiled.
“You're early.”
He laughed.
“Five minutes.”
She raised an eyebrow.
“Unusual.”
He handed her the flowers.
“Congratulations.”
She looked around.
“I did it.”
He smiled.
“You did.”
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Amelia looked at him.
“Thank you for not trying to buy the studio for me.”
Lorenzo laughed softly.
“I was tempted.”
She smiled.
“I know.”
He took her hand.
“But you wanted it to be yours.”
She nodded.
“Yes.”
May you like
He kissed her forehead.
“Then it should be.”
